Files provided by the bank are typically retrieved automatically and are then available in the corresponding overview in BL Banking. When the program starts, new account statements, for example, are retrieved. However, unless you open the account overview, the new statements may go unnoticed. The same applies to new orders awaiting signature in the EDS overview. In general, it may be difficult to keep track of everything when a lot of different data is retrieved at the same time. Real-time notifications can be a helpful tool to manage your retrieved data in a better way.
A bank that provides real-time notifications provides an order type that transmits the connection parameters to the WebSocket server. To receive notifications, you must configure the WebSocket connection with this order type in the Bank properties and open the connection, preferably during program start. The WebSocket connection must remain active while working with BL Banking. If a connection error occurs, you must reestablish the connection in the properties of the affected bank.
Which files are to be retrieved from a bank is configured in the Bank properties under Account statements, Customer protocol, Notifications, and PDF documents. Here, retrieval must be enabled for each item, and the correct fetch order type must be entered. Your user profile at the bank must include these fetch order types and your permission. Note that the WebSocket connection itself does not retrieve any files.
With the function Retrieve file from bank, you can manually retrieve files at any time. For details, see the chapter Retrieved files. Automatic retrieval is controlled by your preferences for File Transfers and Account Information.
You can also link the retrieval to the receipt of a corresponding notification. To do this, enable the following preferences:
As soon as real-time notifications are available, a text message appears in the Status bar of the related overview, along with the Display button. If you have enabled app notifications in your operating system, the same text will also appear there in a pop-up. This way, you will be informed even when BL Banking keeps running in the background. Clicking on a notification in the operating system has the same effect as the Display button in BL Banking. In Windows, you can also find notifications in the taskbar under the icon ∧ (Hidden Icons). The BL Banking program icon is displayed here to open a notification.
This notification text informs you about new orders that you need to sign in the EDS and is displayed first. Clicking the Display button displays the EDS overview, with the Open tab in the foreground. The EDS overview is automatically updated when the program starts. Refresh the EDS overview again if the program has been open for a while. Orders that need to be signed are indicated by a brush icon in front of them.
This notification text will only appear after the text New order in VEU, to inform you about files that are ready for download. The Display button opens an overview of unread real-time notifications from all banks. The entries remain here until they are marked as read, even if you close and reopen the dialog box. Once read, they are no longer available, nor are they available after exiting BL Banking.
The list is sorted by bank, followed by a description of the file type, including the order type or BTF. Next to the notification’s receipt date, the exact time of the last retrieval is displayed, if available. This allows you to see whether the reported files are already in the program or still need to be retrieved. By clicking the checkbox in the Read column, you can mark a single notification, or mark all of them using the Mark all as read button below the list. Similarly, you can unmark individual notifications or mark all of them as unread using the Mark all as unread button.

If there is no retrieval date in a row or if the last retrieval occurred before the notification was received, you can open detailed information for retrieval. To do this, click on the row and then on the Display button, or double-click on the row.
Figure: Example of detailed information
The informational text summarizes which bank sent the notification, what type of files are available, how many files are ready for retrieval, and where they can be found afterwards. Click Yes to download the files immediately. The time displayed in the column Last retrieval is updated.
For some types of detailed information, you can check the box Always retrieve automatically. This ensures that such files will be retrieved as soon as a real-time notification is received. If the notification contains account information, the preferences Fetch account information on receipt of a real-time notification is enabled at the same time. If it was a status report, the user setting Fetch payment status reports when notified is enabled.
If you do not retrieve new files via real-time notifications, they will be retrieved when you refresh the corresponding view. There are also preferences for retrieval upon refresh, which are all enabled by default.
